Welcome
from Linda Hansen

Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury website!  We hope this is a helpful way for you to begin to know us, and we’re grateful to the volunteers who designed and run this website so beautifully.

If you’re new to Unitarian Universalism, you may be interested to know that most of us—including me—did not grow up in this faith tradition, but discovered it as adults.  For many of us, discovering Unitarian Universalism is a kind of “homecoming”—finding a place, a community, in which our questions and our wonder are truly welcome.

In North America, Unitarianism and Universalism (which merged in 1961) began as reactions against the Calvinism prevalent in the late eighteenth and early  nineteenth centuries.  Unitarians argued that Jesus’ divinity was not biblical (one God rather than three), and that human nature was not as depraved as the Calvinists supposed.  Universalists argued that a loving God could never predestine any of God’s children to an everlasting hell (universal salvation).  Over time, both groups realized there is truth to be found in the many world religions, and even in our own individual experience, and both placed their focus on this world rather than any that might follow.  Now we have no creed, but we share a set of principles that encourage us to seek meaning here and now, and to help others to be able to do the same.

The best way to get to know us is to visit.  We hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Rev. Linda Hansen
