A few thoughts for the week ahead from …Rev. Barbara
“It is good.
It is good to be.
It is good to be here.
It is good to be here together”
We will begin our all congregation Ingathering Service on September 12, 2010 with these words. It is good for me to be here beginning. I am energized by your good work, good works and good will.
I hope that you are able to keep comfortable in this heat. Many must work outdoors despite the heat. I gave the men mowing the lawn here at UUCD a few glasses of water. It was so hot in the afternoon. They were glad to accept them. I was grateful for their labors. The property looks good.
I hope that this summertime, with all the news and issues of the current days, that has been excessively hot, has also given you the leisure time for the luxury of quiet breathing and calm reflection. In my quiet moments this weather puts me in mind of Emerson’s elegant meditation.
In this refulgent summer, it has been a luxury to draw the breath of life. The grass grows, the buds burst, the meadow is spotted with fire and gold in the tint of flowers. The air is full of birds, and sweet with the breath of the pine, the balm-of-Gilead, and the new hay. Night brings no gloom to the heart with its welcome shade. Through the transparent darkness the stars pour their almost spiritual rays.
I hope that you have allowed yourself, if not yet, then perhaps on this Labor Day holiday weekend, the blessing of recreation, and some spiritual vacation from your routine of activities and responsibilities.
May those times of re-creation leave you now refreshed and renewed, and ready, even glad, to begin again. I look forward to saying with you: It is good to be here together.
With love and in good faith,
Rev. Barbara

This optimistic, uplifting novel set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Skeeter is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams. Assured, layered, full of heart and history.
